Summer with toddlers is full of adventure… backyard play, park trips, splash pads, pool days, and spontaneous picnics. But if you’ve ever left the house with a toddler, you know it takes a little planning to keep everyone happy, comfortable, and protected from the heat.
I created this toddler summer must-have list to help make summer days easier with the essentials we actually reach for again and again.
1. Toddler-Friendly Sunscreen
Protecting little skin is one of the biggest summer priorities. Look for a sunscreen that is gentle, easy to apply, and made for sensitive skin.
Summer sunscreen must-haves:
- Mineral sunscreen for toddlers
- SPF 30+ protection
- Water-resistant options for pool and splash days
- Easy-to-pack travel sizes
My favorite has been this Hello Bello Baby Mineral Sunscreen. My daughter has very sensitive skin and this doesn’t cause any issues.
Tip: Keep one sunscreen in your diaper bag and one at home so you’re always prepared.
2. Sun Hats for Extra Protection
A good sun hat makes outdoor play much easier. Look for hats with:
- Wide brims
- Lightweight breathable material
- Adjustable straps
- UPF protection
A toddler who refuses sunscreen might still happily wear a fun sun hat!
We have used these for the last two years!
3. Portable Fans for Hot Summer Days
Toddlers get uncomfortable quickly in the heat. A small stroller fan or portable fan can make car rides, walks, and outdoor adventures much more enjoyable. I love my Momcozy fan!
Great uses:
- Stroller walks
- Zoo trips
- Park days
- Outdoor naps
- Summer road trips
4. Toddler Water Bottles
Keeping toddlers hydrated is so much easier when they have a water bottle they love carrying.
Look for:
- “Leak-proof” lids
- Straw tops
- Handles for little hands
We have loved our YAYA My First Tumblers from Walmart.
Bonus: Letting toddlers pick their own bottle can encourage them to drink more water.
5. Comfortable Toddler Swimsuits
Whether you’re headed to the pool, beach, or backyard sprinkler, a comfortable swimsuit is a summer essential.
Favorites include:
- Long-sleeve rash guards for sun protection
- Quick-dry materials
- Easy diaper changes
- Fun prints toddlers love
Rufflebutts has some of the cutest suits for girls and boys.
6. Toddler Sandals
The right summer shoes make every outing easier.
Look for:
- Adjustable straps
- Easy on/off styles
- Water-friendly materials
Perfect for playgrounds, walks, and splash pads. My toddler loves her Crocs, they are comfortable and easy. We also love the standard closed toe strappy sandal.
7. A Picnic Blanket for Outdoor Adventures
A washable picnic blanket is one of those items you don’t realize you need until you have one. There are so many good options but this has worked well for us.
Use it for:
- Park lunches
- Backyard play
- Reading outside
- Snack breaks
- Family outings
Choose one that is:
- Waterproof
- Easy to fold
- Machine washable
8. A Portable Sunshade
A little shade goes a long way during summer.
Great options:
- Beach umbrellas
- Pop-up canopy: this is great when you have a lot of people and adequate space
- Small shade tent: we use this when it’s just us or there isn’t as much room.
- Outdoor play shades
A shaded spot helps toddlers take breaks from the heat while still enjoying outside time.
9. Mom Summer Must-Haves Too
While we’re making sure our toddlers are protected from the sun, moms deserve a little summer protection too. These simple essentials make outdoor days more comfortable and help you feel prepared for everything from park trips to pool days.
Sunglasses
A good pair of sunglasses is a summer everyday essential. Look for:
- UV protection
- Comfortable lightweight frames
- A style you’ll actually want to wear
Bonus: Keeping sunglasses in your diaper bag means you’ll always have a pair ready for those bright summer mornings. Goodr has great sunglasses, fun colors and funny names. The only sunglasses I have multiples of.
A Comfortable Hat
A mom-friendly hat is perfect for:
- Park days
- Poolside lounging
- Picnics
- Walks around the neighborhood
My favorite hat. Comfy and cute!
SPF Lip Balm / Chapstick
Your lips need sun protection too! A lip balm with SPF is an easy thing to throw in your purse or diaper bag.
Look for:
- SPF 15+
- Moisturizing ingredients
- Easy reapplication throughout the day
A little self-care goes a long way during busy summer days. I opt for this Aquaphor lip protectant but chapstick makes a good SPF option too.
Final Thoughts
Summer with toddlers doesn’t have to feel chaotic. Having a few reliable essentials packed and ready can turn a stressful outing into a fun memory.
The goal isn’t perfection… it’s making those long summer days easier, cooler, and more enjoyable for the whole family.
